Former Mets GM Steve Phillips, who served as the boss of Bobby Valentine for 5 1/2 seasons in New York, said on Tuesday that he does not believe that the Red Sox manager is the chief culprit in the team's disappointing 59-64 record to date. Instead, Phillips -- who clashed often with Valentine when both were in New York, and who ultimately fired him after the 2002 season -- suggested that "some other manager of the team might be 20 games under .500 with all the injuries they've had."
